ISLAMABAD, Pakistan on Wednesday lodged a strong diplomatic protest with the United States over remarks by U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor regarding the status of Jammu and Kashmir during his visit to Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

The U.S. Charge d’Affaires in Islamabad was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where Pakistan conveyed a strong demarche over what it described as factually incorrect remarks concerning the status of the disputed territory.

Pakistan strongly condemned and categorically rejected the characterisation of Jammu and Kashmir as a “part of India,” reiterating that the region is an internationally recognised disputed territory whose final disposition remains pending in accordance with the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

The Foreign Office stressed that the U.S. Ambassador’s statement was irresponsible and contradicted the long-standing and well-documented position of the United States regarding the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. Islamabad also pointed out that such a statement was inconsistent with the United States’ stated commitment to international law and the principles and purposes of the UN Charter.

Pakistan further emphasised that public statements by senior U.S. officials should take into account the established international status of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute and should not prejudge its final settlement.

While conveying its protest, Pakistan also acknowledged and appreciated U.S. President Donald Trump’s offer to mediate between Pakistan and India to help resolve the Jammu and Kashmir dispute following Marka-e-Haq.

Islamabad urged the United States to ensure that its future public statements remain consistent with the disputed status of Jammu and Kashmir and with the established international framework for resolving the issue.

The demarche was lodged at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad on August 19, 2026.
