Karachi, – The Ministry of Maritime Affairs of Pakistan inaugurated the International Maritime Sustainability Exhibition and Conference (IMSEC) 2024 in Karachi today. The conference, a significant platform for advancing Pakistan’s maritime economy, was officially opened by Mr. Arsenio Antonio Dominguez Velasco, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The event was attended by Syed Murad Ali Shah, Chief Minister of Sindh, who participated as the chief guest.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh, along with Secretary Maritime Affairs Syed Zafar Ali Shah, and the Chairmen of Karachi Port Trust (KPT) and Port Qasim were among the distinguished guests. Other high-profile dignitaries also graced the event.
The IMSEC 2024 aims to promote Pakistan’s maritime economy by fostering global and regional partnerships while facilitating investment in this critical sector.
During the ceremony, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah welcomed the Secretary-General to Karachi, which he referred to as the “gateway to Pakistan.” He highlighted the significance of the Secretary-General’s presence, expressing hope for enhanced bilateral relations and cooperation with the IMO. Shah emphasized Pakistan’s pivotal role in global maritime trade due to its strategic geographical position in South Asia. He remarked, “Karachi’s ports are essential pillars of our maritime trade, and we are committed to promoting environmental protection and strict compliance with international maritime standards.”
The Chief Minister further elaborated on Pakistan’s active efforts in securing a sustainable maritime environment, focusing on minimizing marine pollution and preserving marine ecosystems. Shah also highlighted the government’s initiatives to develop a skilled workforce and noted the vast opportunities that collaboration with the IMO could bring to Pakistan’s maritime community.
Secretary-General Arsenio Antonio Dominguez Velasco, in his address, commended Pakistan’s dedication to maritime sustainability. He acknowledged the Ministry of Maritime Affairs’ efforts to identify new areas for collaboration and encouraged Pakistan to remain an active participant in global maritime initiatives.
“The IMO shares Pakistan’s commitment to sustainability,” he stated, stressing the need to address trans boundary species protection, minimize pollution from ships, and reduce plastic pollution. Arsenio also highlighted the importance of adopting green maritime corridors and alternative fuels such as methanol.
Recognizing the challenges facing Pakistan’s maritime industry, including the shortage of qualified seafarers, the Secretary-General noted that the country holds immense potential for expansion. “With 90 percent of trade passing through the sea, there are countless opportunities for growth and innovation,” he said, urging Pakistan to focus on increasing efficiency, sustainability, and the development of a comprehensive action plan to boost maritime trade.
Arsenio also praised Pakistan’s hospitality and emphasized the need for continued collaboration between Pakistan and the IMO to modernize and digitalize ship recycling efforts. He concluded by encouraging the government to strengthen the maritime economy and generate more opportunities for its growth.
The IMSEC 2024 promises to be a vital stepping stone in the advancement of Pakistan’s maritime sector, creating a foundation for sustainable trade, environmental conservation, and international cooperation.
