KABUL: India has announced its intention to enhance ties with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. This was conveyed by Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesperson for India’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a press briefing yesterday.

India’s commitment includes contributing to Afghanistan’s developmental and infrastructure projects, expanding trade ties through the strategic Chabahar Port, and fostering cultural exchanges, mainly in sports like cricket.

Jaiswal highlighted that trade relations between Kabul and New Delhi could be significantly bolstered through Chabahar, creating better market opportunities for Afghanistan’s products and ensuring access to affordable, high-quality goods for the Afghan populace.

The announcement follows a high-level meeting between Vikram Misri, India’s Deputy Foreign Minister, and Mawlavi Amir Khan Muttaqi, Afghanistan’s Acting Foreign Minister, held in Dubai. Jaiswal described this interaction as the most significant engagement between the two nations in recent times.

“We have clearly stated that we want to take more steps to provide humanitarian assistance and engage with the government and people of Afghanistan in developmental cooperation,” Jaiswal said, underscoring India’s commitment to fostering long-term relations.

Experts believe this renewed focus on trade and cooperation could lead to substantial economic growth for Afghanistan, enhancing its connectivity and access to international markets.
