Strengthening Pakistan-Russia Relations: High-Level Meeting Advances Bilateral Agenda

Moscow, In a significant step toward enhancing Pakistan-Russia bilateral cooperation, a high-level delegation led by Ambassador Syed Tariq Fatemi, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Foreign Affairs, and Haroon Akhtar Khan, SAPM on Industries and Production and focal point for the Pakistan Steel Mills project, held an important meeting today with Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk in Moscow.

The meeting underscored both countries’ shared commitment to deepening strategic engagement across a wide range of sectors. At the outset, Ambassador Fatemi conveyed warm greetings and well wishes from Pakistan’s leadership to the Russian Federation, noting that goodwill at the highest level was providing positive momentum to bilateral ties.

Comprehensive Review of Bilateral Cooperation

The two sides reviewed the full spectrum of Pakistan-Russia relations, including:

Political and diplomatic engagement

Trade and economic collaboration

Energy and connectivity initiatives

Industrial and agricultural partnerships

Ambassador Fatemi emphasized that strengthening relations with Russia remains a priority in Pakistan’s foreign policy and reaffirmed Pakistan’s view of Russia as a stabilizing force in global affairs.

Revitalizing the Pakistan Steel Mills Partnership

SAPM Haroon Akhtar highlighted the importance of ongoing discussions around the new Pakistan Steel Mills project in Karachi, which he described as a potential “leap forward” in economic cooperation. The project is viewed not only as a nod to historic ties but also a symbol of future-oriented partnership. He briefed the Russian side on Pakistan’s investment-friendly industrial policies and recent macroeconomic achievements under the current administration.

Russia’s Strategic Outlook Toward Pakistan

Deputy Prime Minister Overchuk, accompanied by key Russian ministers, welcomed the Pakistani delegation and reaffirmed Russia’s view of Pakistan as a “natural ally.” He reflected on his previous visits to Pakistan, particularly meetings with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during the SCO Heads of Government gathering in 2024.

Overchuk highlighted strategic projects like the pilot cargo train between Russia and Pakistan launched in August 2025 and ongoing efforts to establish railway connectivity via Uzbekistan, positioning Pakistan as a critical hub in Eurasian logistics and trade.

Dialogue on Regional and Global Issues

The meeting also addressed broader geopolitical developments in South Asia, Afghanistan, and the Middle East, along with cooperation in multilateral forums. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close dialogue on global issues of shared concern.

In closing, DPM Overchuk reiterated President Vladimir Putin’s strong support for expanding cooperation with Pakistan and shared that the Russian President is looking forward to meeting Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the sidelines of the upcoming SCO Council of Heads of State summit in Tianjin, China, in August 2025.

This high-level engagement marks a meaningful advance in Pakistan-Russia relations, building on historical goodwill and a shared vision for regional stability and economic integration.
