Azerbaijan commemorates the fifth anniversary of its historic victory in the 44-day Patriotic War, a decisive event that ended nearly three decades of occupation and reshaped the geopolitical landscape of the South Caucasus.

On November 8, 2020, the Azerbaijani Armed Forces liberated key territories that had been under occupation since the early 1990s, fulfilling the long-standing aspiration of the Azerbaijani people to restore their country’s territorial integrity. This landmark date, decreed as Victory Day by President Ilham Aliyev, symbolizes not only military triumph but also the dawn of a new era for the nation and the wider region.

From Occupation to Liberation

Despite the prolonged economic, social, and humanitarian consequences of the 30-year conflict, Azerbaijan consistently pursued peaceful means to resolve the issue. However, Armenia’s continued occupation, its illegal activities in the occupied territories, and repeated provocations — including inflammatory rhetoric such as “new wars for new territories” — undermined peace efforts.

The situation escalated on September 27, 2020, when Armenia launched another large-scale attack along the line of contact. Exercising its right to self-defense under the UN Charter, Azerbaijan launched a counter-offensive that evolved into the 44-day Patriotic War — a campaign that would ultimately restore the country’s sovereignty.

During the conflict, Armenian forces targeted civilians in major Azerbaijani cities such as Ganja, Barda, and Tartar, far from the front lines, resulting in civilian casualties and widespread destruction. Nevertheless, the Azerbaijani army, under the leadership of President Aliyev as Commander-in-Chief, demonstrated remarkable resolve and professionalism.

A Historic Victory

Through determined military operations, Azerbaijani forces liberated the cities of Jabrayil, Fuzuli, Zangilan, Gubadli, and the culturally symbolic Shusha, along with more than 300 settlements. The military success paved the way for the peaceful return of Aghdam, Kalbajar, and Lachin districts — achieved without a single shot being fired or casualty suffered.

In total, Azerbaijan regained control over approximately 700 settlements, effectively restoring its territorial integrity and implementing UN Security Council Resolutions 822, 853, 874, and 884 from 1993 — resolutions that had long called for the withdrawal of occupying forces from Azerbaijani lands.

Regional Stability and International Support

On September 19–20, 2023, Azerbaijan conducted swift counter-terrorism measures to neutralize remaining illegal armed formations in the Karabakh region, restoring full sovereignty over all its territories within 24 hours.

Throughout these developments, Pakistan stood firmly by Azerbaijan, voicing unwavering support for its territorial integrity and sovereignty. Pakistan’s principled stance during the Patriotic War and its continued solidarity underscored the deep-rooted brotherhood between the two nations.

Reconstruction and a Vision for Peace

Following the 2020 victory, Azerbaijan embarked on an ambitious program of reconstruction and revitalization in the Karabakh and East Zangezur regions. Massive infrastructure projects — including the rebuilding of roads, airports, and residential areas — have enabled thousands of displaced citizens to return to their ancestral lands.

Azerbaijan has also reaffirmed its commitment to peace and stability in the South Caucasus. On August 8, 2025, Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a Joint Declaration in Washington, witnessed by the United States, marking a historic milestone toward a comprehensive peace agreement. The move is expected to open new avenues for regional cooperation and prosperity extending beyond the Caucasus.

Honoring the Heroes

As the nation celebrates Victory Day, the people of Azerbaijan pay solemn tribute to the martyrs who gave their lives for their homeland. Across the country, ceremonies are being held to honor their memory, celebrate the achievements of the Azerbaijani army, and express hope for a peaceful and prosperous future.

Five years on, the spirit of the Patriotic War continues to inspire unity, resilience, and national pride — values that will guide Azerbaijan as it builds a new chapter of peace and progress in the South Caucasus.
