ISLAMABAD, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister (DPM/FM), Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar on Monday reaffirmed Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to international peace and security, and to an effective and inclusive multilateral order with the United Nations (UN) at its centre, in a message issued on the International Day of Peace.
In the message issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the deputy prime minister and foreign minister said the day served as a significant reminder that dialogue, diplomacy, and adherence to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter remained the only means of achieving sustainable peace.
He called on the international community to fulfil its responsibilities by upholding the UN Charter, respecting international law, and pursuing the just and lasting settlement of disputes through peaceful means.
Highlighting Pakistan’s role as a long-standing and leading troop contributor to UN peacekeeping, the foreign minister said the country’s enduring commitment to the maintenance of international peace and security was well established. He said Pakistan continued to advocate a comprehensive approach to preventing and resolving conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy.
He cited Pakistan’s diplomatic initiatives in support of the pacific settlement of disputes, including mediation between Iran and the United States, as reflective of this commitment. He also referred to the unanimous adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2788, sponsored by Pakistan during its presidency of the Council last year, describing it as an important reaffirmation of the Security Council’s resolve to reinforce mechanisms for the peaceful settlement of disputes.
The deputy prime minister said unresolved disputes continued to fuel regional and international insecurity, and that durable peace could not be achieved when the right of peoples to self-determination was denied and UN Security Council resolutions were left unimplemented. He said this was particularly evident in situations of foreign occupation, including in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir and the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
He said Pakistan stood ready to serve as a trusted partner in advancing shared commitments towards a peaceful and prosperous world.
